If you are a typical "post-beginner" no-limit player and trying to get better, I have one piece of advice that should improve your game: stop playing Ax. Literally. Don't play ace-ten or lower, under any circumstances. In a typical loose-aggressive home game, you will have difficulty making money with this hand and you are much better off tossing Ax every time and waiting for better hands. The most consistent losing play I see from players who are still climbing the NLH learning curve is playing Ax incorrectly, typically calling with top pair against a better kicker or bluffing at raggedy boards with it. At the least, I'd recommend you really analyze your Ax hands and figure out why you are losing with them.
I have to respectfully disagree... getting in with a suited ace cheaply could pay off handsomely..
I don't play Ax when x = 6 thru 9 AND suit of x not equal to suit of A.
the price has to be right as well.
I think you should play a suited ace, if you can get in for a fair price, AND, more importantly, if your able to let it go when the flop misses.
I love the suited Ace......
Posted by: Slayre on August 23, 2005 11:21 AMMy advice is really targeted at beginner NL players -- pretty much none of the poor players I see in NL games are capable of playing any Ax hand profitably over time, because they can't drop top pair even when obviously against a superior hand, and they overvalue inside straight draws and flush draws. I'm not making a blanket statement that these hands are trash, and you're right, they can pay off handsomely over time if played correctly. What I'm saying is that for beginning players who are not yet solid players, I think it's a better strategy to avoid those hands altogether until the player has a better grasp of the game.
