I'm fairly excited about the Amateur Poker League, which appears to be the first legitimate, well-organized attempt to bring legal, free poker in a national US league format.
The APL started in Kansas and seems to be in rapid expansion. I got a message from an APL rep saying that they are bringing the APL to Austin in the coming weeks and are looking for tournament organizers.
The APL is most active in Kansas and a couple other midwest states, but really appears to be seriously expanding nationwide.
If you've played in an APL event, or know any futher information about it, please let me know.
You're back! Yay! Have missed you.... I'm curious about the APL, as well. I found them online several months ago, but there are no events in my state. (Even freerolls with a prize given away is illegal here).

Posted by: pokerprof on August 19, 2004 05:22 AMthere is a very interesting new free poker league that is starting in austin next wednesday the 1st at Buffalo Wild Wings. They are called The Holdem House and their url is www.theholdemhouse.com.
website is still under construction but u can go to it if u wish.
Anyway they are giving away nightly prizes and people can qualify for the trip to vegas. They seem to have a good thing starting. Also they have 2 tournaments per night so u can go there for the 7 or 10 oclock tourney.
that is all i have right now
Posted by: AJK on August 25, 2004 01:45 AMI actually work as a host and Area League Director for the APL in Dallas/Fort Worth. We should be expanding into the Austin area within the year. The response here has been unbelievable as you can tell by the number of locations we now have. If anyone has any kind of questions regarding the league feel free to contact me anytime at apl1david@yahoo.com or (817)480-8513
Posted by: AplDavid on September 9, 2004 01:31 AMI checked out the hold'em house over at the Tavern last tuesday. They run a well organized tourney with nice chips and tables. Id reccomend to anyone looking for free poker. They have all of their events on their calender at http://www.theholdemhouse.com
Posted by: zfelso on September 20, 2004 09:36 PMCheck out barpoker.com. We are actively holding Texas Hold'em tournaments in 5 states. We offer nightly, and monthly prizes. Also, we will be sponsoring one player from each state we are in for the World Series of Poker 2005.
Posted by: barpoker on October 23, 2004 03:17 PMThere is also a new company in Austin called ThePokerPub. They started in Kansas as well as the APL and they run a great game. They are starting at Hill's Cafe on November 3 at 6 & 9 and on every Wed night thereafter. They are also holding a tournament at Trophy's on Nov 7. Come check them out-Poker Pub is HUGE in Kansas.
Posted by: Stephanie on October 24, 2004 06:08 PMBarpoker is moving into Austin!
Posted by: barpoker on October 26, 2004 02:07 PMBarpoker is currently in San Antonio, and moving into Austin!
Posted by: barpoker on October 26, 2004 02:08 PMI played at an APL event in Irving TX and it was not very good. 7.5 gram chips and Walmart tables. I played in a barpoker.com tournament and they had real chips and real tables. I also think they give away a thousand dollars a month to the monthly tournament winner, and also give a $10,000 buy in seat to the 2005 wsop
Posted by: JnJ on October 28, 2004 09:06 PMI'm an Area League Director for APL in N. Texas and am happy to let you know that, after a few false starts, we are PLAYING IN AUSTIN! Our First Venue in Austin is Razzoo's and they have had a terriffic turn-out the last 2 weeks. The RSM for Texas has spent several days there working on new venues that will be announced shortly. Keep checking our Website for the new stuff that is coming on. Some huge announcements are already posted and more are on the way. If you are interested in hosting tournaments at your location give me a shout; scottm@cdiweb.com or 972.489.7197. I had previously talked to some of you but a laptop thief now has my records. If you are still interested in working as an APL tournament director, I can direct you to the appropriate person.

Posted by: scottm on October 29, 2004 01:21 AMI played in an APL event in Kansas. The people were rude, and they did not know much about poker. The lady running the session also played in the game, even though she was not eligible to win anything. I think thats unfair to the players. I played in a barpoker.com event and it was great! Nice tables and chips. They gave a small prize away at each session. They play for $1000 monthly prize and yearly prize of a $10,000 seat in the World Series of Poker. I played in Wichita, and those people were great. Keep up the good work Barpoker!
Posted by: barpoker.com on November 3, 2004 12:57 PMI gave up playing in the APL due to players not knowing the rules of the game. I even sent an email to the corporate office and was informed that I was correct in my rule and the APL started stating that players could not show their hands to anyone while the game concerning that hand was live. It lasted for about 2 weeks and players were again showing their hands. This second time happened the first week of september 2004 and I will never again play in an APL sponsored event that a bunch of monkeys could run better.
