gambling binion's horseshoe closes!

U.S. Marshalls raided Binion's Horseshoe (Las Vegas) to seize debts, forcing the casino to close its doors, perhaps forever.

Oddly, the marshalls allowed the poker games to continue well beyond the time they closed the general gaming floor:

By then, all tables and slots were closed, the bars were vacated and only about 100 poker players and about 50 Horseshoe workers remained on the casino floor. The poker room operates from a separate cage and the marshals had yet to close it, a floor supervisor said.
Link (thanks, Rob!)

I would guess the most likely outcome is the property gets sold and re-opened by new ownership. It would seem likely the new owners would keep the Binion's Horseshoe brand, and keep the World Series of Poker going -- but the timing of this (just a couple months before the WSOP) also makes the WSOP a ripe target for usurpment by another casino like Bellagio, which has been heavily promoting big-dollar tournaments for some time now.

I've been to Las Vegas the last six years to play poker (with the exception of last year).

In 1999, I stayed at Binion's during the WSOP and was amazed to see the how little Becky Binion promoted the event. No website on the internet. Outside of the casino there was one nondescript poster touting the WSOP and yet inside there were over 500 players competing.

The casino was dead!! She didn't have a clue.
She closed the basement restaurant which always had a waiting line.

I deposited a $5,000.00 cashier's check upon arrival. I still had over $2,000.00 credit and they wouldn't even let me take that money home.
They had to send me a check. Then do you think they'd be in touch the next year to offer some of kind of comp for a room the next year. Never heard a word from them.

With the phenomenal interest in poker the Horseshoe should be a goldmine but Becky has had her head up her rearend. Any new owner should make a killing.

I say good riddance to the hotel. Stayed there a couple of years ago and got placed in a room on the second floor directly above the casino. One of the worst rooms I ever stayed in. Reeked of 50 year old smoke and urine combined.
Good place to play craps though.

Binion's was bailed out by Harrah's. There are twelve to fifteen people still working. Only five girls left to answer the phone.

My husband was a guard. during all the end mess. They owed so much amoney and at the end when there were only a few guards left and a girl to answer phones. they issued a final paycheck. shorting everyone possible at least 8 hours. No way to collect. what a mess!

HELLO,
I JUST GOT BACK FROM VEGAS, I STAYED AT THE GOLDEN NUGGET, BECAUSE THE HORSESHOE WAS CLOSED.
I HAVE BEEN GOING TO VEGAS SINCE 1982, PROBABLY 30 TRIPS. ALWAYS STAYED AT THE HORSESHOE. WAS IN VEGAS IN JULY OF 2003 AND STAYED AT THE HORSESHOE, I WAS SHOCKED. THE PLACE JUST WENT TO HELL. THE COFFEE SHOP WAS TERRIBLE, IT USED TO BE THE BEST PLACE TO EAT IN VEGAS FOR GOOD HOME COOKING, LINES WOULD BE ALL THE WAY UP THE STAIRS. THE ROOMS WERE DIRTY, AND THE CASINO HAD NO ACTION. THE POCER ROOM ONLY HAD ABOUT 5 TABLES GOING.
WE WENT UP TO THE STEAKHOUSE TO EAT ONE NIGHT AND THEY HAD NO AIRCONDITIONING. I COULD NOT BELEIVE WHAT I WAS SEEING.
I CONSIDER MYSELF A BIG PLAYER, THE SHOE ALWAYS TOOK VERY GOOD CARE OF ME AND MY PARTY, WHEN I ARRIVED IN JULY THEY PICKED ME UP FROM THE AIRPORT IN THE HORSESHOE BUS, NOT A LIMO. I DONT EVEN THINK THEY HAD ANY LIMOS LEFT.
THEY USED TO GIVE COMPS TO PLAYERS THAT PLAYED, BIG OR SMALL. THEY MADE THE SMALL PLAYER FEEL I MPORTANT. THAT WAS ALL OVER. NO MORE COMPS, NO MORE GOOD FOOD, NO MORE ANYTHING. THE 1 MILLION DOLLAR DISPLAY WAS EVEN GONE.
I DONT KNOW HOW SUCH A GREAT PLACE, WITH A GREAT HISTORY COULD GO SO BAD, BUT IT DID.
THIS PLACE USED TO BE PACKED ALL THE TIME, WEEKENDS AND WEEKNIGHTS, ALWAYS.
AND THEY HAD THE BEST FOOD IN TOWN, COFFEE SHOP, SNACK BAR (GREAT HAMBUGER), AND STEAKHOUST (WHAT A VIEW)
BECKY SHOULD BE SHOT. SHE GOT WHAT SHE DESERVED.
I JUST HOPE HARRAS REOPENS AND STAYS OPEN AS THE HORSESHOE.
IT IS A LANDMARK, IT WILL NEVER BE BINIONS HORSESHOE AGAIN, NOTHING WILL EVER BE LIKE THE HORSESHOE IN ITS PRIME. I AM JUST GLAD I GOT TO EXPERIANCE IT WHEN IT WAS GOING WELL.
THANKS BENNY, AND JACK BINION.
BECKY I HOPE YOU READ THIS AND LEARN SOMETHING, GREED WILL GET YOU NOWHERE. TAKE CARE OF THE PEOPLE THAT TAKE CARE OF YOU. YOU AND YOUR HUSBAND DESTROYED SOMETHING THAT WILL NEVER BE REPLACED.
YOU WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY FOR DISTROYING BINIONS HORSESHOE.
BY THE WAY. THE GOLDEN NUGGET WAS A PLEASANT DISCOVER. FIRST CLASS.
AND THEY WILL BE OPENING A POKER ROOM SOON.
HEY BECKY, CAN I MAKE ONE MORE BET WITH YOU PLEASE, I WILL LAY 7 TO 5.
THE BET IS. I BET YOUR DAD IS ROLLING OVER IN HIS GRAVE.
THANKS FOR READING
