It's second nature to me, but I was recently at a home game in Austin where the players had a long discussion on what exactly the rules are, so you may want to read it: Link

In a similar vein, I was recently at a game in Vegas where the board showed two high pairs. Two players had been betting at each other but slowed down after the first pair hit the turn and then double-checked the two-paired river. The board was something like 3♠Q♣K♦K♠Q♣. At the end the first player flipped up his A♠J♦. The second player, who was not a good player, sighed and turned over his top card, which was also an ace. I was next to him and could see his other card, which was an 8. Both players were playing two pair with an ace, but the guy showing a single card clearly thought he was outkicked even though the J didn't play. "I also had an ace", he said, pointing at the other guy.

Just as he was about to muck his hand, the dealer said to him, "well if you show me your other card I'll give you your half of the pot." The guy suddenly realized his hand was good, and flipped up his lower kicker to show his full hand and get half the pot.

The dealer should absolutely not have said anything to the second guy and was clearly in the wrong. All the players on my end of the table knew the guy had a chop hand but weren't saying anything because he was so clearly going to muck, and the dealer had to know the same thing.

But the really amazing thing about this hand was that the guy with the Jack - who would have won the whole pot if the dealer hadn't said anything - didn't go ballistic at the dealer. He just said "you probably shouldn't have said anything," took his half of the pot and still tipped $1. Amazingly graceful behavior, especially considering he was a Vegas native and I think a professional player. I've seen a bunch of similar situations, and in every one the guy on the short end of the deal has gone totally ballistic, the floorman has been called over, and they still have to chop the pot because two winning hands were turned over on the end. This guy was mature enough to realize that's what would have happened, and he could either get totally flustered, yell at everyone and leave the game in protest, or stay and play at what was an extremely loose, passive game full of players who didn't know whether their hand was good on the end or not.

What limit was this game? Was the person really dumb, or was he drunk? This all sounds a bit ridiculous to me

It was at the $1-2 no-limit game at the 4 Queens, it definitely was a bit ridiculous! I really couldn't believe how well the guy took it, I've seen many more calm players than this guy go crazy over much less at the table.

I've always played 'cards speak.' I've found that players who reap the infrequent benefits of being told their hand quality are often of so little skill that it's only a short reprieve.
