A bill just passed in Florida that allows a max bet of $2 in poker rooms, erasing the previous cap which was a max pot of $10. $2 max isn't huge, but it's a good start. Link
"Instead of a $10 pot limit, there will be a $2 bet limit with no more than three raises," Winning said. "We hope this goes through. It could pick things up. The pot could go up anywhere from $20 to $40."I think this guy has his poker math wrong, though; in a $1-2 hold'em game, for instance, a 3-way pot capped all the way makes the pot $72. The theoretical max (10 players, capped all the way) is $240, which is way above the current $10 limit.
Update: Tyler pointed out that not only has Jeb Bush not signed this bill yet, but he also vetoed a similar bill last year at the last minute. So no Florida poker boost yet.

One thing to remember, HB 1059 has been sitting dormant from May 2 until this past Monday. It is the *last* bill from this legislative session to be presented to Jeb. And, he vetoed (at the last minute) a similar bill last year.
I don't know if this one is going to come into effect. It'd be nice, but I for one am not holding my breath.

How the heck do they enforce the $10 pot limit?? I just can't see how that would work.

If the pot ever gets to $10, nobody is allowed to bet anymore and they just deal the rest of the hand. I don't know what the policy is if the pot is near $10 and any bet + call by the active players would push it over $10. And I'll probably never find out as I can't see myself ever playing in a game with a $10 pot cap :)

The Bill (HB 1059) was signed and has not even been presented to Bush for signing yet. The bill pass overwhelmingly, and even if he vetos it (which every indication is that he will NOT) it could go back for a 2/3rds vote and would pass that way. The bill was revised this year and the specific things that made it get vetoed were outlined by Jeb Bush and those things were removed. He has now indicated that he must look at thesegamling bills as a way to raise money for schools (billion dollar shortfall). The things that made it fail last year were leaving the rooms open 24 hours, and open on Sundays. Those were removed.

Based on posts to rec.gambling.poker, it appears that the average rake in Florida is either 5% or 10% up to a cap of $5 in 1-2. I would be surprised if the norm was not 10% but according to recent posts the Seminole Casino and the Daytona Beach Kennel Club both have a 5% rake which is not too bad for that limit.
As for becoming a dealer, I don't know about Florida specifically but generally the requirements are to go through dealer school and demonstrate that you know how to deal. Dealers usually make minimum wage plus tips. According to this article - http://gaming.unlv.edu/research/reading/Rose158.html - most casinos tell you that you can make up to $14 an hour in tips but the average is more like $10 an hour. Hope that helps.

Question: Anyone know: "If a person runs a card room as a private club and they acquire a Federal Tax Stamp, can the operation be prosecuted under the RICO statute?" As I read the comments (not the legislation as of yet), it would appear that a properly constituted private club would be legal in running these games.
