Excellence in Breakfast Tacos

A Saturday tradition since I got to Austin. I'm a bacon, potato and egg man.

Don't even talk to me about breakfast tacos if you haven't put Mi Madre's on the list, which is simply the best, period. And Taco Shack, which is an institution. It's like writing about burger joints without mentioning Hut's or Casino el Camino.

I know a lot of people feel that way. Personally I have had two bad experiences at Taco Shack - cold breakfast tacos are no good at all. As to Mi Madre's, I do like their taco meat breakfast taco, but their BT's are a little too greasy for even my greasophilic tongue. Their coffee was decent though. But if I go out to that neck of the woods for brunch I hit Hoover's.

As for burgers... I am a huge fan of the Casino, but I've had temperature issues with the burgers I've had at Hut's too. I like Mike's Pub and Waterloo a lot better.

Actually, I consider Mi Madre's coffee to be borderline undrinkable--I have it on the table almost as a ritual, but that's about it. But I stick by their tacos. A #2 chorizo, a #8 migas, and/or a #10 refritos are my picks.

My issue with Casinoburgers is the wait. When they eventually arrive, though, they're just in a different category than Waterloo. Don't know about Mike's.

Somebody mentioned a supposedly excellent breakfast taco joint on Ceasar Chavez, but was vague about the name. Any clues?

There's also a Maudie's II on S. Lamar, just past Suzy's. It's generally less crowded and the food's the same.

Adam: could you be talking about Juan in a Million? It's on Cesar Chavez. I've never been there but they do serve BT's. If it is supposedly excellent I'll have to check it out.

You should definitely try out Mike's Pub. It's in the parking garage next to the Stephen F Austin hotel downtown. A family run joint that has good burgers.

Don't forget Ken's tacos on Cameron - as big as your head, with excellent fresh salsa.

rudy's bbq has tacos and is the most convenient place for me to stop on the way to work. generally i like pot. and egg, but their potatos are old and too salty....which is a shame. their egg and bacon is ok. its a good size taco.

cw: I actually checked out Ken's for lunch today. Great place! I was really disappointed by their BT schedule - they stop serving them at 11 on weekdays, and even worse, noon on weekends - but their carne guisada tacos were great, as were the items my coworkers got (an enchilada and a couple orders of fajita tacos).

The salsa was a little too light on cilantro and heat for my taste, and it was in a squeeze bottle which I found a bit odd. I will definitely give the BT's a shot some morning though.

and avocado girl: I heard rudy's BT's are decent, but I have this problem... whenever I get within half a mile of rudy's I get an uncontrollable urge to order half a pound of extra lean. Not sure if I could overcome that to try their BT's. We'll see.

The comments about Juan in a Million do not do the place any sort of justice. Go there. Now. (don't wait until a sunday morning as the place is crowded as all hell) Get the Don Juan with 2 extra tortillas and munch on the chips and hot sauce while you wait. You will be presented with a plate with 1 tortilla laid flat, and a mountain of potato, egg, bacon and cheese on top of it. it is phyiscally IMPOSSIBLE to fit the filling into the included tortilla, which is where the 2 extras come in. Gorge youself and realize just what you've been missing.

Notes: Juan in a Million goes through a ton of bacon a month. That's 500 pounds a week. None of this pansy ass sliced shit, either, it's chopped, so every now and then you get a 1 inch chunk.

Also, Foodhead's breakfast tacos are good for some lighter fare, especially their gypsy grove tacos (avacado, potatoe, sprouts. soooo good.)

On the recommendations here, me and my brunch buddies went to Juan in a Million last weekend. An interesting place, but the BT's left a bit to be desired. I got 2 bacon-potato-egg, and one of my friends got 2 don juans. I have to say, we were both a bit disappointed. The main issue was the potato content: all the tacos were about 80% potato, and the potato tasted pureed (I much prefer diced and still somewhat firm). The service was poor, which was somewhat excusable since the place was totally packed out.

On the upside, it is definitely an unusual place and we loved the handshake from the owner, as well as taking in the wide spectrum of guests.

I'll give it one more shot, but so far it's not on the list.
